Eerste demofabriek geopend door Koningin Máxima:

UPPACT: CIRCULAIRE ECONOMIE IN DE PRAKTIJK

Op woensdag 1 april is de demofabriek van het nieuwe recyclingbedrijf UPPACT in Farmsum officieel geopend door Hare Majesteit Koningin Máxima. Dat gebeurde tijdens een feestelijke bijeenkomst, in aanwezigheid van ruim 100 genodigden. Het nieuwe, innovatieve bedrijf gaat 4.000 ton plastic en textiel per jaar verwerken tot bouw- en constructiemateriaal, waaronder palen, planken en balken. Daarmee voorkomt UPPACT dat dit afval eindigt in de verbrandingsoven en reduceert het de uitstoot van CO2 en andere gassen substantieel. Een sterk praktijkvoorbeeld van de circulaire economie!

Na de officiële opening kreeg koningin Máxima een rondleiding door de fabriek. Ze sprak met de directie, medewerkers en betrokken partners over de ontwikkeling van het bedrijf.

“Wereldwijd is gemengd plastic de grootste onopgeloste afvalstroom,” zegt Jan Jaap Folmer, CEO van UPPACT. “Juist die stroom – die nu grotendeels wordt verbrand – kunnen wij verwerken tot nieuwe bouwmaterialen. Daarmee wordt afval letterlijk grondstof. Deze DEMO-fabriek laat zien dat het kan. Maar om echt impact te maken, moeten we snel opschalen. Dat kunnen we niet alleen – daar hebben we de hele keten voor nodig. En vergis je niet. Dit kan heel groot worden, of móet zelfs heel groot worden, juist om dat plastic afvalprobleem kleiner te maken.”

De unieke technologie achter UPPACT, de zogenoemde UnWastor, is ontwikkeld door het Australische Plastech Recycling. Na een succesvolle testfase in de Eemshaven is in Delfzijl nu een installatie op commerciële schaal gerealiseerd. Mede dankzij het ecosysteem van het Chemport Innovation Center kon UPPACT in korte tijd doorgroeien van start-up naar scale-up.

Doorbraak voor moeilijk recyclebaar plastic

Tijdens de opening benadrukte prof. dr. Francesco Picchioni (Faculteit Chemical Engineering, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen) het belang van oplossingen voor de moeilijkste plasticstromen:

“Van al het plastic afval dat we inzamelen en scheiden, blijft altijd een reststroom over van circa 10 tot 20 procent. Dat is gemengd, vervuild materiaal waar bestaande recyclingmethoden nauwelijks raad mee weten en dat nu grotendeels wordt verbrand. Juist daar ligt de grootste uitdaging voor de circulaire economie.”

Waar voor deze stromen vaak wordt gekeken naar chemische recycling, kiest UPPACT voor een andere benadering. Met een gepatenteerde mechanische technologie – de UnWastor – worden gemengde plasticstromen zonder uitgebreide voorbewerking direct omgezet in nieuwe bouwmaterialen.

Deze aanpak is onderscheidend door een hoge materiaalopbrengst (yield), aanzienlijk lagere kosten en een grote tolerantie voor vervuiling en stoorstoffen. Daarmee wordt een reststroom die tot nu toe geen economische waarde had, alsnog benut in duurzame toepassingen.

“UPPACT laat zien dat juist voor deze moeilijkste fractie een praktische en schaalbare oplossing mogelijk is,” aldus Picchioni. “Niet door verdere complexiteit toe te voegen, maar door het proces te vereenvoudigen en direct waarde te creëren.”

Kraamkamer voor scale-ups

“UPPACT is de tweede scale-up die wij faciliteren in het CIC (Chemport Innovation Center)”, vertelt Bart Jan Hoevers, CEO van Groningen Seaports. “Hier in de Eemsdelta leggen wij als het ware de rode loper uit voor start-ups die snel willen doorgroeien. Ze ontstaan vaak vanuit een idee op de zolderkamer. In de scale-up fase moet men die ideeën in de praktijk brengen. Daarom zijn scale-ups vooral op zoek naar grotere bedrijfsruimte, meer elektriciteit en water, geavanceerde infrastructuur en diverse vergunningen. Hier is dat allemaal voorhanden! Omdat wij midden in een chemiegebied gevestigd zijn, kan hier meer dan elders in Nederland. Met ons ecosysteem zijn wij de ideale kraamkamer voor innovatieve en industriële scale-ups en dragen we concreet bij aan de circulaire economie. Wij helpen bedrijven bij het leggen van contacten met kennisinstellingen zoals de RuG en de Hanze, met andere bedrijven en met overheden.”

Innovatie en kapitaal

“Voor industriële scale-ups is toegang tot kapitaal vaak de grootste uitdaging”, aldus Sytze Hellinga, Investeringsmanager NOM. “Commerciële banken financieren zelden een eerste fabriek. Ook venture capital is terughoudend bij kapitaalintensieve productiebedrijven met een relatief hoog technologisch risico. Regionale ontwikkelingsmaatschappijen zoals wij vervullen daarom een sleutelrol bij het verbinden van innovatie en kapitaal. En dat is heel belangrijk! Nederland heeft nog veel meer startups en scale-ups nodig om de grote transities te kunnen realiseren.”

UnWasting concept

“Financieel gezien speelt de NOM voor ons zeker een sleutelrol, samen met het Groninger Groeifonds”, vertelt Folmer. “We konden daarnaast ook profiteren van subsidie uit het Europese Just Transition Fund (JTF). Ook voor de verder opschaling en uitrol van het concept rekent UPPACT op de support van onder andere de NOM. “Samenwerking met alle stakeholders is belangrijk, alleen kunnen wij het niet. Om impact te maken gaan het UnWastor-concept snel verder opschalen. In Nederland, Europa en wellicht daarbuiten. Want dit moet gewoon heel groot worden om impact te kunnen maken.”

UPPACT scales and builds new UnWaste Factory in Delfzijl (Netherlands)

Uppact scales up significantly with the help of NOM, the Groningen Growth Fund and the Polestar Capital Circular Debt Fund

Processing 4,000 tons of plastic waste annually into valuable building and construction materials. That is what UPPACT | The UnWaste Company will do, now that the financing for the entire project has been completed. The NV NOM and the Groninger Groeifonds (GGF) will join as shareholders and the Polestar Capital Circular Debt Fund will provide a loan. Together with the previously obtained JTF subsidy, the capital has been raised to start up the first line in the DEMO factory in Farmsum in the middle of next year. This plays a crucial role in the transition to a circular economy, in which waste flows are converted into useful and preferably circularly designed products for the regional market through recycling and reuse.

De scale-up van Jan Jaap Folmer en Michel Walstock kan iets bijzonders: ongewassen, ongesorteerde en ongeshredderde stromen gemengd plastic en textiel afval verwerken tot robuuste palen, planken en balken. Dat laat de Unwastor – zo noemt UPPACT de door Plastech Recycling in Australië ontwikkelde machine – al zien in de hal van maritiem-afvalinzamelaar Bek & Verburg in de Eemshaven. Nu is het tijd voor de volgende stap: een volledige productielijn in het Chemport Innovation Center (CIC) in Farmsum. Met de financiering op zak waren Folmer en Walstock afgelopen week in Australië om de Plastech Mixer-Melter te inspecteren voordat deze klaargemaakt wordt om naar Nederland verscheept te worden.

,,This is a crucial moment. It is quite a job to raise financing for such a project, so we are very pleased with the confidence of the NOM, the GGF and Polestar Capital to be able to build our DEMO factory,“ says Michel Walstock, CFO of Uppact. ,,Now we can continue, on our way to as much impact as possible. Because that is what we are all about. That plastic should no longer end up in the incinerators,” adds Jan Jaap Folmer, CEO of Uppact. The Unwastor in the DEMO factory will be more than 3 times as large as the test model that is currently operating in Eemshaven. In short, the machine swallows all kinds of plastic and spits out beautiful products. Poles, planks, beams for construction, but also bumpers that are used in the port of Delfzijl. Jan Jaap Folmer: “Our customers are very enthusiastic about the quality of our products.”

Innofest X Lowlands: van trash naar treasure met UPPACT

In Biddinghuizen gaat op vrijdag 19 augustus één van de grootste popfestivals van Nederland weer van start gaat: Lowlands. In samenwerking met de Green Deal Circular Festivals en het Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat faciliteert Innofest voor het eerst een innovatietest op dit festival, een primeur om trots op te zijn.

Wat gaat er gebeuren?

Bij deze popfestival, gaat UPPACT verzamelen na afloop van het evenement het afval van de festivalcamping en nemen dit mee naar hun loods in de Eemshaven. Onze innovatie, de UnWastor, recyclet al het plastic en textielafval om er vervolgens nieuwe producten van te kunnen maken. Die producten, denk aan een campingtafel of een rijplaat, zijn volgend jaar dan weer op Lowlands te vinden.
